Working with The Coca Cola Company to develop new local sourcing models from smallholder fruit farmers in East Africa. And working with Syngenta to identify new base of the pyramid distribution models for high quality seed in West and East Africa. These are just some examples of the type of projects overseen by TechnoServe’s Strategic Initiatives unit, as we partner with multinational corporations to deliver on our mission to use business solutions to help solve poverty.TechnoServe is a global NGO that will celebrate its 50th birthday in 2018. We operate in 30 countries around the world, with more than 1,500 staff. Our work is based on the philosophy that if you provide the knowledge and market access to small businesses in emerging markets, you can successfully increase their incomes, helping poor individuals feed their families, afford to send their children to school and invest in their communities. In 2016, our work supported 594,000 farmers and entrepreneurs to increase their business revenues by $196M.

The Strategic Initiatives team at TechnoServe is responsible for designing and supporting initiatives with our multinational corporate partners. These types of projects – as distinguished from our other work which is funded by governments and donors – account for a quarter of our work. Our corporate partners source commodities from or sell products to tens of millions of individuals that live below the poverty line around the world. We believe with the right business model innovations and investments, there is a pathway to take millions out of poverty in a way that is sustainable and scalable.

To bring these initiatives to fruition, our team works with our corporate partners to develop win-win business cases for investing in these new business models. Our team consists of former consultants from top-tier firms such as McKinsey and BCG who also typically have some experience in development.

The team is largely based in New York City. Through studies paid for by our partners, this team develops the business case and works with these partners to support implementation of the projects through our field offices. We believe this combination of top-tier advisory expertise at the intersection of business and poverty, paired with our ability to implement field solutions is a unique way to deliver meaningful change to people’s lives. What Are We Looking For?Over the next three years, we are looking to grow our team substantially.

To do this we are looking for individuals who combine top-tier business advisory experience and a commitment to our mission. The team members will support the development of new, cutting-edge business solutions that impact the lives of thousands of people in the world’s poorest places. The Associate will execute strategy projects with leading multinational corporations focused on embedding shared value in their business practices while collaborating with TechnoServe’s country teams across Africa, Latin America and India.

The specific nature of the engagements will depend on the evolving needs of our corporate partners. However, it will likely include:

  • Supporting development of corporate sustainability strategies as they relate to poverty reduction
  • Conducting diagnostics to develop the business case and implementation plan for specific projects around the world
  • Supporting our implementation teams in ensuring projects generate both impact and value

  • Develop analytical models and conduct quantitative analyses
  • Synthesize findings and deliver regular progress reviews
  • Prepare and present final deliverables
  • Alongside engagement with corporate partners, the position will also support Strategic Initiatives’ new business development and analysis of relevant global development issues

  • Commitment to the TechnoServe mission of poverty reduction
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of experience at a top tier management consulting firm
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
